Spencer is currently in year 12 at Newtown School of the Performing Arts. Spencer began his musical journey on the violin at the age of 5. He participated in numerous Suzuki workshops and performances including Suzuki summer school in Matsumoto. Spencer changed to the viola 2 years ago when his teacher noticed his large fingers and said “you have perfect Viola hands”.
Spencer was appointed principal viola of SYO Phil last year, performing a variety of different challenging orchestral repertoire. He also led the viola section at Arts Unit Orchestra for their performance of Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Schools Spectacular 2022-23. Spencer has gained experience in playing a variety of chamber works, highlighted by a quartet performance of Janacek’s String Quartet No 1 at the Opera House. He has also recently been involved in the AYO music programs, participating in the 2024 national music camp in Adelaide.
Spencer has numerous hobbies outside of music including sailing and mountain bike riding. He has sailed in every capital city in Australia as well as internationally and was selected to be in the Australian Sailing team in 2020. Spencer hopes to have a future where he can fulfil his love of music and the outdoors.
