Toby’s passion for music began at age seven with his primary school concert band. The next step was a highly educational four-year journey with James Pensini and the Symphonic Wind Orchestra, joining the SYO family in 2017. Accepted into the Flagship orchestra in 2021, he fondly remembers performing Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony as principal trumpet in the Domain car park, alongside his brother Cooper on principal trombone. A recent highlight was working with Benjamin Northey for SYO’s Big West Tour in 2023. The orchestra’s experienced educators and consistent willingness to tackle challenging and satisfying repertoire has prepared Toby with skills he has applied in ensembles at the Sydney Conservatorium and in many groups around Sydney. Graduating from St Aloysius’ College in 2022, Toby received an HSC Encore nomination, as well as achieving 2nd in the state for Music Extension and 3rd in the state for Music 2. Toby has been incredibly fortunate to study with Daniel Mendelow since 2019, and is now in the second year of his Bachelor of Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium under teachers Owen Morris and David Elton.
