TOBY RANDS
Toby Rands is in the third year of his Bachelor of Performance course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, under the tutelage of Owen Morris and David Elton. During his time there, Toby has served as principal trumpet for the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony. He has also performed in masterclasses with Philip Cobb, and Jeffrey Segal, and was selected for the Wind Symphony tour of Japan and Korea in 2024. Toby has attended multiple Australian Youth Orchestra camps since 2022 as well as Young Mannheim Symphonists programs run by the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra. Sydney Youth Orchestras has been central to Toby’s musical journey since joining the Symphonic Wind Orchestra in 2017. Under the guidance of long-time teacher Daniel Mendelow, Toby successfully auditioned for the Flagship orchestra in 2021. In 2023, he was appointed principal trumpet, notably touring out to Broken Hill with SYO’s Big West Tour, conducted by Benjamin Northey. Recently, he participated in a masterclass with Jon Dante at the Sydney Opera House, courtesy of SYO. Toby enjoys teaching at The Kings’ School and Santa Sabina College, and freelancing with various Sydney-based ensembles.
