Growing up in the town of Orange, NSW, Owen showed interest in music from an early age. For example, he enjoyed ‘conducting’ classical music from the coffee table, and said he wanted to play the cannons when he grew up upon hearing Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture.

At age 12 Owen started music lessons with Richard Gill, after a combined primary school choir workshop at the Orange Regional Conservatorium. He started regular percussion lessons in year 10, with Richard Miller the long-term principal timpanist of the SSO who had fortunately retired to Bathurst. The next year, Owen moved to Sydney to complete year 11 and 12 at the Conservatorium High School, learning percussion with Joshua Hill, and graduating in 2020. He received an Encore nomination for his Music 2 performance and had his Extension Music composition included in the HSC Encore program.

In 2021, Owen started a Bachelor of Music (performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium, where he is learning with Shaun Trubiano

Owen has recently received a scholarship offer to Manhattan School of Music where he will commence study in September 2022, being the first Australian percussionist to do so since Shaun.

Owen first played with the SYO in 2019, officially joined in 2021, and became the principal percussionist in 2022. He has also been principal timpanist at the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp, principal percussionist with the Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony, and of the NSW Regional Youth Orchestra with whom he participated in workshops with the Berlin Staatskappelle, the Australian World Orchestra, and the Opera Australia Orchestra.

He has also performed with: the Australian Youth Orchestra Seasons, Momentum Ensemble and Young Symphonists, Ensemble Apex, the NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra Young Mannheim Symphonists, Sydney Symphony Orchestra Playerlink, the Sydney Conservatorium Chamber Choir, and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.
