James is currently studying a Bachelor of Music Performance on violin under Janet Davies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he was awarded the Ted and Susan Meller Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2019. James enjoys a versatile career as an orchestral, chamber player and as a soloist on modern and period violin. He performs regularly with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, having been selected to partake in the ABO Young Mentorship Program at the age of 17. James is currently the concertmaster of the Sydney Youth Orchestra and has previously held the position of Principal Second Violin. He has also performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra, Ensemble Apex and has performed in projects with The Musicians Project and the Ben Adler Quartet.
In 2019, James was honoured to have been awarded the Austria Scholarship from SYO and the Austrian National Tourism Office, which saw him travel to Vienna and Salzburg in 2020 to immerse himself in the Austrian music industry. As a keen chamber musician, James was appointed the Convenor of Chamber Music at St Andrew’s College within the University of Sydney in 2020. In 2021, James formed the ‘Forelle Ensemble’, a Sydney-based piano quintet, along with a group of colleagues from SYO and Sydney Conservatorium. The Forelle Ensemble made its debut in June 2021 in Sydney before embarking on a tour of regional NSW and ACT, in partnership with the Austrian National Tourist Office. James has performed in masterclasses with highly acclaimed musicians; Lukas Ljubas, Jan Pospichal, Anne Harvey-Nagl, Michael Barenboim, Louis Creac’h and Midori Goto. Besides playing the violin, James is a self-proclaimed walking enthusiast. He is particularly interested in languages, having studied French in his school years, he has now taken up a German course.
