Harry Macpherson is currently undertaking fourth year study in classical bass trombone at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Coming from a musical family, Harry first began studying tenor trombone under Gerry Ramage at the Orange Regional Conservatorium at the age of eight. Since, he has studied with Graham Sattler, Ashley Carter, and is currently under the tutelage of Chris Harris through the Conservatorium. Typical of a primary school aged student, the slide and volume of the trombone was an immediate attraction, but later, the unique, highly vocal sound of the trombone became the primary appeal. Harry switched to the bass trombone full time in 2020.
Coming from a regional area, he gained much experience playing with the NSW Regional Youth Orchestra, serving as their principal trombone for a number of years. Through this program, he was involved in a number of workshops with the Australian Opera Orchestra and the Australian World Orchestra. Additionally, Harry was involved heavily in many jazz and classical ensembles, as well as choirs, throughout Orange. He has also been involved in the School Spectacular Orchestra, NSW State Music Camps, SSO Playerlink and the Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony. He will be entering his second year as SYO principal bass trombone this year, and his third year involved in SYO ensembles.
