Hailing from country NSW, Harry Macpherson is currently in his fourth year as Principal Bass Trombone of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, having previously played Principal Trombone with the SYO Philharmonic.

Harry has recently completed his Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, having studied under Sydney Symphony bass trombonist Chris Harris.

In 2024, Harry will be assuming the position of Principal Bass Trombone with the Australian Youth Orchestra for their seasons, as well as performing extensively in ensembles across Sydney.

Harry has previously made appearances with the Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, including on their 2022 Europe tour, the Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Concert Orchestra, Sydney Metropolitan Orchestra, the North Shore Wind Symphony, and many other groups around Sydney. He was also involved in the Sydney Conservatorium’s China Tour in October 2023, performing brass chamber music in the cities of Harbin and Shenyang.

Harry switched to the bass trombone full time in 2020, having performed as a tenor trombonist up until that point. He initially learnt trombone through the marvellous staff at the Orange Regional Conservatorium, in Orange NSW. He gained much experience playing with the NSW Regional Youth Orchestra throughout his time at school, serving as their principal trombone for a few years. Through this program, he was a part of several workshops with the Australian Opera Orchestra and the Australian World Orchestra. Additionally, Harry was involved heavily in many jazz and classical ensembles, as well as choirs, throughout Orange. He has also been involved in the School Spectacular Orchestra, NSW State Music Camps, SSO Playerlink, and the Sydney Conservatorium Wind Symphony and Brass Ensemble.

Harry is excited to perform with the SYO for their 2024 programs.
