Cooper Rands

Cooper started learning the trombone at the age of eight, and graduated St Aloysius’ College in 2020. He received HSC Encore nominations for Music 2 in 2019 and Music Extension in 2020, as well as achieving 4th in the state for Music Extension in 2020. Cooper is studying his Bachelor of Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium under teachers Nigel Crocker and Scott Kinmont and has participated in several masterclasses, most recently with Jonathan Ramsay, principal trombonist of the Berlin Philharmonic. 

Cooper started with SYO in 2015 with the Symphonic Wind Orchestra on euphonium. He joined the Flagship orchestra in 2017 in year 9 and participated in their European tour the same year, later becoming principal trombone of the Flagship orchestra in 2019. A highlight of his time in the SYO was the LSO discovery project in 2023, which comprised of time with London Symphony Orchestra musicians as well as a rehearsal with Sir Simon Rattle. Cooper’s orchestral experience also extends to Australian Youth Orchestra programs, as well as working as a casual musician with ensembles including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Cooper won the Balmain Young Concerto Soloist Competition for 2024.
