Alexander Butler started playing trumpet at the age of 10 at Como West Public school, choosing trumpet on the whim that his grandpa used to play it.

Alex joined the South Sydney Symphonic Winds group from 2016-2018 where he played on the Sydney Opera House stage. He took up playing Jazz when he started attending Kirrawee High School,  Opportunities to attend significant musical events like Generations in Jazz and Essentially Ellington allowed him to meet and play with great musicians like James Morrision and Denis DiBlasio.

Alex was also playing in programs like the Arts Unit Jazz Orchestra in 2022, but he swapped from jazz to classical trumpet when he started going to the con in 2023. This has led him to find that it wasn’t jazz he loved, it was all music as a collective. He is now being tutored by Owen Morris and David Elton and has experienced many different ensembles at the Sydney Con. With this fast switch of musical styles Alex joined the Syo in TheSYO 2025 as third trumpet as his first time playing with Syo. Alex has also gone to Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music camp 2026 where he was given the opportunity to work with Sarah Butler and many other esteemed musicians.
