Symbiosis 2025

You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.
– Maya Angelou

"Symbiosis" presents a unique collaborative concert featuring members of The Sydney Youth Orchestra performing under the mentorship of The Omega Ensemble. This experimental chamber music event emphasizes the powerful synergy that emerges when musicians work together, highlighting how individual talents can blend to create something greater than their separate parts. The concert's theme reflects the biological concept of symbiosis, where different organisms form mutually beneficial relationships, mirroring the mentorship relationship between the professional musicians of Omega Ensemble and the emerging young artists.

Under the expert guidance of Omega Ensemble, one of Sydney's leading chamber groups, these young performers will take on the challenging dual role of both soloist and ensemble member. The intimate format of chamber music allows each musician to showcase their individual artistry while simultaneously demonstrating their ability to listen, respond, and blend with their fellow performers. This delicate balance between individual expression and collective harmony promises to deliver a compelling musical experience that celebrates both personal virtuosity and collaborative musicianship, strengthened by the direct mentorship of established professional musicians.

Founded in 2005, Omega Ensemble is one of Australia’s most dynamic chamber music ensembles.

With a mission to champion extraordinary Australian musical talent through high-energy and impactful performance, the Ensemble presents an annual National Touring Program to metropolitan and regional cities across Australia. The Ensemble also frequently appears in national cultural festivals and has twice toured to China, delivering concerts and masterclasses in Shanghai and Beijing.

Earning accolades such as ‘first-rate musicians’ (The Daily Telegraph), ‘the best chamber music outfit in town’ (SMH) and ‘one of Australia’s most forward-thinking ensembles’ (Limelight), the Ensemble was appointed as Ensemble-In-Residence at Sydney’s City Recital Hall from 2014-16, has been nominated for multiple APRA/AMCOS Classical Music Awards for Best Performance and Best New Work, and in 2019 was nominated for Artist of the Year in the Limelight Awards.

At the heart of the Ensemble’s success is the talent it supports, including some of Australia’s most accomplished classical musicians and artistic collaborators, as well as the world-class Australian and international composers the Ensemble commissions each year.

With a commitment to preserve and present foundational chamber music repertoire, the Ensemble also proudly stands at the forefront of new musical expression, with world and Australian premieres of groundbreaking new works. Commissioning new Australian music also forms the foundation of the Ensemble’s education and outreach programs, presenting in-school workshops, as well developing a growing resource of educational materials to support classroom teaching, and the CoLAB: Composer Accelerator Program.
